5 Creative Holiday Team Building Activities During COVID-19

Culture | Dec 18, 2020

It’s the most wonderful time of the year… we all know how the rest of the song goes. So, I’ll stop at that.

We know that many of us have not seen our best buddies at work. Whether we like it or not, we’ll have to be content seeing each other over a Zoom virtual party.

Nobody wants this, but we all have to do our part to protect our families, friends, and loved ones. The CDC shares guidelines for holiday celebrations – Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, and New Year’s. Be sure to check it out before organizing a party or adjust your plan accordingly.

Today’s your lucky day if you’re reading this, and you still need ideas for a holiday party.

We’ve gathered a list of holiday celebrations that are excellent team building activities as well.

Here’s what we came up with.

Diverse group of people celebrating the holiday

Ugly sweater contest

Ever since it became a trend, many holiday parties include ugly sweater contests. Your office can host a virtual game.

There are two ways to do this.

The simplest way is for coworkers to wear their own ugly sweater at the virtual holiday party. The other way is to send all the staff members a build-your-own-ugly-sweater kit. Supplies should roughly include a sewing kit, yarn, googly eyes, patches, buttons. The sky’s the limit!

Secret Santa

There’s still time for this. Pick your secret Santa using Draw Names. Send the presents before the Zoom video chat. This is a great way to improve office culture because the gift receiver needs to guess who sent them the gift.

At ULS, we incorporate game days into our work schedule to break the work cycle. You can play trivia games, charades, or word games.

Here are some websites to host your virtual games.

Movie night

Another holiday team building activity to have at work is to host a virtual movie night. How else can you spread the holiday cheer with your work besties, right?

Check out these holiday favorites.

  • Love Actually
  • Elf
  • The Night Before
  • Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas
  • Anna and the Apocalypse
  • The Grinch
  • Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Story

Holiday cookie delight

In this edition of a cookie bakeoff, everyone’s a winner. While your coworkers won’t be able to taste your Christmas cookies, they’ll be able to see each other’s beautiful holiday treat.

The fun thing with a virtual party is that you get to share your creation with your own family as well. You get to sit down, chat with your coworkers, and enjoy some delicious cookies while sipping your favorite coffee or tea in the comfort of your home.

In times of COVID, we adapt to new realities in the workplace. Many indoor celebrations are swapped for online events to maintain a safe and healthy work environment.

As a digital marketing agency, we’re doing our part to keep our communities and loved ones safe and healthy this holiday season.

How are you celebrating the holidays? What team building activities do you have in mind?
